Joe has dedicated the past 13 years to raising money to help provide nutrition for little Daniel and over 150,000 additional Colorado kids in need. What do you have in common with Joe and Daniel? The Colorado Project - Glass Art at it's Finest

We love unique events that bring people together and assist us in fighting hunger. A couple months ago we got a call from an organization looking to do just that. Naturally, we said "Absolutely, we're in."

The Colorado Project is a non-profit organization with a mission of creating an environment that will promote and build community among the glass art industry through philanthropic projects and events. Last year, they organized a glass blowing event that was a great success and they're gearing up for their second annual two day event that starts tomorrow! This event brings together glass artists from around the nation to create art and raise money for a local charity. There will be a silent auction of glass art on Saturday, July 17 with a closing time of 5:00 p.m. Proceeds from this year’s event are being donated to us!

Stop on by Saturday from 10-5 for the auction, bid on some fantastic art, eat and drink and help support FBR. The event is taking place in a warehouse at 6850 Broadway, Unit E, Denver (US 36 & Broadway exit, on the left, right past Mickeys Top Sirloin restaurant).

Reflections of Hunger Photo Contest

Hunger is often an invisible issue and one that Food Bank of the Rockies strives to bring to the surface. For the second year, FBR and Denver Magazine have partnered to give local photography lovers the opportunity to submit photographs of what hunger looks like from their perspective in our great state.

Amateur & professional photographers, use your artistic abilities to display what hunger in Colorado looks like to you and submit your photos and application for judging. It doesn’t have to be a face. Get creative!

Submissions will be judged via a Viewer’s Choice voting process at foodbankrockies.org. Photos with the highest number of viewer votes will be submitted to a panel of judges to determine contest winners in both the amateur and professional categories. Finalist entries will be displayed at a Fat Tail Gallery event on September 29, 2010. Winning entries for both categories will be announced at the gallery event, featured on foodbankrockies.org, denvermagazine.com and will receive prize packages. All finalists will be featured on this blog and will receive complimentary year subscriptions of Denver Magazine.

VOTE to Give FBR $10,000!

Patti J. is a new favorite friend of FBR's. She and her husband live in Littleton and are long time supporters of FBR. Patti entered a contest in April, sponsored by Harlequin Books and author, Debbie Macomber. Debbie's newly released novel, Hannah's List, is all about second chances.

The contest asked entrants to compose an essay of 100 words or less about second chances. This is national contest and we're proud to say Patti's essay was selected as one of the final ten. Now the public has been asked to log on and vote for their favorite essay. The contest ends on July 4th and the winner receives a prize of $10,000.00. Patti has chosen to generously donate her earnings to winnings for us!!!!!!!!! This isn't a requirement folks. This is Patti's choice.

Patti was diagnosed with Stage 4 lung cancer in 2007 and was given three months to live. That was 2.5 years ago and she's still going strong most days. Pattie tell us that she has already been given her second chance. So, in her essay, she promised to donate her winnings ($10k) to her local food bank so children and adults will have food on their tables, not go to bed hungry, and get the second chance we all deserve.

Great News for Colorado's Low Income Families

Governor Ritter to Sign Food Stamp Bill

Hunger Free Colorado's first legislative session was a success! With the help of supporting non profit partners and strong sponsors, HB 1022 passed and will be signed into law this week Thursday.

HB 1022 removes the asset test from the food stamp program in Colorado, which means grandparents raising their grand kids don't have to sell their burial plots and those struggling in this economy don't have to wait until they have depleted all their savings and property to feed their families. Counties will no longer have to verify assets making each case faster to process.

The bill also directs the State to create an outreach plan. This plan will create new public-private partnerships to assist low-income families with the difficult application process while drawing down a 50% federal match. This is a Victory for Colorado's Low Income Families!
