Christopher Apple Orchard (aka, Sonny Bono)

Christopher Apple Orchard, aka, Sonny Bono, found himself without a place to call home last year. He's legally blind, was forced out of his apartment and had nowhere to go. He had never been homeless and had no idea what resources were at his disposal. When he discovered that the county he had lived in didn't have any shelters, he drove his trusty car to Denver and hoped for the best. This man went from being stable and self reliant to losing everything. And yet Christopher Apple Orchard is a ray of sunshine and is so incredibly grateful for everything hes been given.

Why is our job so vital? We provide food to places that people like Christopher rely on to survive. Watch his story - he captured our hearts immediately.

Action Needed: Call Congress about the FY2012 Budget TODAY!

On Tuesday, June 14, the House is expected to vote on the FY 2012 Agriculture Appropriations legislation, which makes significant cuts to nutrition programs that are critical to food banks and the clients they serve. We are calling on all of Hunger Action Center advocates to help us demonstrate strong grassroots opposition to cutting TEFAP, CSFP, WIC, and SNAP. While we understand the need to balance the budget, cutting programs that bring hunger-relief to low income Americans is not the way to do it.

Call today! Help us track our impact by using our toll-free number, 877-698-8228. After a brief message you’ll be asked to enter your zip code to connect directly to your House member’s office. Once you are connected:

Tell them that you are a constituent and state the name of the town you are calling from.

Let them know you are calling about the FY 2012 Agriculture Appropriations legislation.

Deliver this message:

As an advocate for the hungry and my local food bank, I urge you to vote AGAINST the FY2012 Agriculture Appropriations legislation, which cuts funding for TEFAP commodities, CSFP, WIC and SNAP reserve funds. Cutting safety net programs is the wrong way to balance the budget. Instead, I ask that you work with your colleagues to pass a budget that addresses the deficit while safeguarding programs that protect our nation’s most vulnerable citizens.

Season to Share

If you live in Denver, chances are you've heard of and maybe even contributed to the Denver Post Season to Share, a McCormick Foundation Fund.  A record-breaking total of $2,665,500 was raised this past year for 73 local charities, including Food Bank of the Rockies. We're thrilled to announce a $50,000 gift from this effort!  200,000 meals will be provided to our neighbors in need as a result of this outstanding program.

For every dollar donated by readers and community and corporate donations, 50 cents is matched by the McCormick Foundation.  The Post and McCormick Foundation pay all administrative and promotional costs, allowing 100% of all donations to go directly to the designated charities.  We have a special place in our hearts for all those involved in Season to Share.  Thanks for including us once again!!!!

Visit the Season to Share website for more info!

Champions Fighting Hunger

We're more than excited to announce a new partnership with our friends at Champion Windows!  They recently launched a summer campaign coined “Close the Window on Hunger” to donate to local food banks all around the country. This summer they'll be donating 50 pounds of food to FBR for every appointment they run and another 100 pounds of food for each order placed. Last summer, their location in Colorado Springs did this and was able to donate over 150,000 pounds of food!

Nationwide, they're trying to donate over 2.5 million pounds of food. You can visit the campaign site – http://closethewindowonhunger.com/ to see how much they've donated.  THANKS to Champion for stepping up to the plate.  Without a doubt, you're champions in our world of fighting hunger.
